In High school I competed in three piano competitions and came first in two. I also earned an associate diploma from Trinity college in piano performance.
2015: Graduate from university, continue working at my part-time job in a fish and chip shop.
2016: The decision is made to go to Japan. To prepare, I take a 5-month TESOL course for teaching English. Move to Japan and start work at NOVA.
2017: Quit NOVA and start work as an ALT in an elementary school.
2020: Join Le Wagon to learn to code for six months, graduate, and help at Le Wagon as a teaching assistance for three months. I am offered a job in Evolany in December and join the team.
I feel like there are many rewarding moments in this job.
Sometimes nothing goes your way in this job, and you leave it feeling like you wasted the day. Like when that program-breaking bug is still there, or you're behind schedule on a project.
But when things go right and you finally fix that difficult bug, or finish that feature you've been working on, that's what the job is all about, and it makes it all worthwhile.
Coming back to something you wrote a while ago and seeing how you could have done things better is a clear indicator that your skills have improved.
My current challenge is to reach the skill level that I can be considered a 'senior developer', where I can be relied on by my team, and junior developers can look to me for guidance. There are many things to learn in programming and new technologies are constantly emerging, so it's important to be continually learning and looking to the future.
Evolany gives developers a large amount of freedom to tackle problems in their own way, while maintaining a good learning environment. Our senior developers are approachable and knowledgeable. Also, free pizza.
I like to play board games with friends and watch movies on the weekend.
An ideal teammate is someone who is chill, has a good sense of humor, and challenges me to become a better programmer too.
